Symptoms Of Concussion: Why It Can Be Serious - Post-concussion Syndrome
Concussion symptoms can include headaches, dizziness, memory loss, confusion (not being aware of surroundings, being unable or slow to answer questions), blurred or double vision, ‘seeing stars’ or bright lights.
In some cases, the victim may suffer symptoms that affect the left side of their body. This suggests damage to the frontal lobe of the brain.
Concussion victims generally recover after two weeks - but sometimes they do not. Symptoms can persist for weeks, months and even years.
This is called Post-concussion Syndrome - also known as post-concussive syndrome (PCS) - and it can have a significant effect on the victim’s ability to concentrate at work, to earn a living and to support their family.
Post-concussion Syndrome can result in subtle but serious personality changes that can destroy people’s careers, break up families and wreck lives.
ITV News has interviewed Coles Miller litigation executive Crispin Cormack on the legal issues surrounding rugby concussion - watch the full news report here.
How The NHS Can Fail Victims Of Post-concussion Syndrome
Post-concussion Syndrome can be difficult to diagnose because often there are no obvious signs such as cuts or bruising to the brain.
At headline level, concussion can be caused by road accidents; violent assaults and contact sports such as rugby, football, boxing and other martial arts.
But there is more to it than that. Concussion is caused by the soft jelly of the brain hitting the hard interior of the skull.
This can be due to violent shaking or by the head undergoing rapid acceleration then deceleration (such as in a car accident).
GPs and A&E staff can diagnose initial concussion easily enough but once the patient has left their immediate care, the NHS can lose track of them.
If that patient then complains some weeks later of continuing headaches and dizziness, the NHS can fail to diagnose Post-concussion Syndrome correctly.
Patients can get lost in the system, passed from one specialist to the next, each of whom may fail to identify and treat the problem. The doctors may be looking at symptoms in isolation and in the context of their particular medical field instead of seeing the bigger picture.
The Solution: Your Shortcut To Better Treatment For Concussion
Victims of Post-concussion Syndrome need to see to a neurologist or a psychologist for expert diagnosis and treatment of the problem. But there is usually a waiting list of around three months.
Contact Coles Miller for expert legal advice and we can help you to beat the waiting list and get swift access to a consultant for specialist treatment and care.
We can also help you to claim compensation for the injuries you have sustained. Claims are handled on a No Win No Fee basis so there is no risk for you.
